HLN are delighted that Vulcan Court has been selected as the Winner in the Small Development of the Year category in the UK Housing Awards 2014. This is HLN’s first multi-disciplinary project to win such a prestigious Award, which involved  the refurbishment and conversion of Vulcan House, a Grade II Listed Building into new apartments with further new build apartments constructed alongside, together with associated courtyard parking and landscaping.

The project was completed in September 2013.  Together with the main contractor Wates Living Space, the Design Team have positively approached the challenges of a steeply sloping site with added complications of an existing basement and retaining structures as well as the challenges of refurbishing a delicate Listed Building which was found to be in a very unstable condition from the outset of work on site.

The development will provide a total of fifteen 2 bedroom apartments for Wales and West Housing. The new build elements are designed to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3+ whilst the whole project has been developed around Life Time Homes, Secure By Design and DQR Standards.

Paul Frowen, Director of Architecture said “Being part of the team which has been able to preserve a building which has played an important role in the history of Merthyr Tydfil, whilst at the same time providing much needed housing in the centre of Merthyr Tydfil is extremely fulfilling.  HLN is delighted to have worked with Wales & West Housing and Wates Living Space in the delivery of this project.  Congratulations to the whole team in winning this award.”
