Red Dragon Hangar
Client: Arup
Project Value: £76m
Contractor: John Laing
Area: 50,000m²
Status: Completed
A £76m super hangar on a 110 acre site in St Athan, South Wales, provides a one stop shop aerospace support to the MOD, overseas governments and industry.
Project Red Dragon, as it is known, constructed by John Laing, was designed to keep DARA, the ministry of Defence’s own maintenance, repair and overhaul prodiver, at the forefront of aerospace maintenance and repair.
Red Dragon provides 17,000m² of workshops and offices and 33,000m² of aircraft accommodation. This is sufficient to house 48 Tornado size jets, or a number of larger aircraft, if required.
The leading edge facility incorporates the very latest technology and has been designed to facilitate the highest standards of quality and productivity. In addition, there is a paint facility and a plastic media stripping facility to support work at the hangar.
The project not only provides a world-class environment for DARA but acts as a catalyst in reinforcing Wales as a centre of global excellence in aerospace maintenance and repair.
